Lecturer: Prof. Tuiji Hautala-Hirvioja, University of Lapland
March 6, 2025

Prof. Tuija Hautala-Hirvioja’s lecture explored Sámi visual arts in Finland from both an art historical and theoretical perspective. She focused on the development of Sámi art from the late 1970s to the present, through three generations of artists born in the post-war era. Societal shifts, evolving attitudes towards the Sámi people, and the rise of Sámi institutions have shaped both cultural identity and artistic expression.
