Near and Far

The Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia and the J. K. Tyl Theatre are continuing their partnership. This autumn, the Intermedia studio is presenting work on the Malá scéna (Small Stage), and on November 25 the theatre will bring a staged reading of Havel's The Memorandum to Sutnarka as part of the HAVEL 26 project.

The exhibition Near and Far presents the work of nine students from the Intermedia studio, led by Vladimír Merta together with Eva Šindelářová. Paintings, drawings, photographs, video experiments, and video performances connect personal experiences with chance situations, specific places with imaginary landscapes, and everyday experience with experimentation.

At the same time, Near and Far does not set the two concepts in simple opposition. Instead, it shows their fluidity and mutual permeability. Sometimes all it takes is a shift in perspective for the familiar to become foreign, and the distant to become surprisingly close.

The exhibition continues Sutnar Faculty's collaboration with the J. K. Tyl Theatre and is the second presentation of student work in the foyer of the Malá scéna in the theatre's new building. This year the two institutions' collaboration is also developing as part of the HAVEL 26 project, marking what would have been Václav Havel's birthday. As part of this, on 25 November a curated Havel-themed evening will take place at Sutnar Faculty, for which Theatre is preparing a staged reading of Havel's play The Memorandum.
